Document ID Security Checks

This article outlines the comprehensive set of security checks performed to verify the authenticity and integrity of an identity document. Each check serves as a layer of protection against fraud, forgery, and tampering.

1. Ultraviolet (UV) and Infrared (IR) Checks

  • Document luminescence check in UV light: Detects document features that fluoresce under UV light.

  • Protection fibers presence check (color, density) in UV light: Verifies embedded security fibers.

  • Document elements visibility check in IR light: Identifies features that are visible only under infrared lighting.

  • B900 ink MRZ contrast check in IR light: Confirms the MRZ (Machine Readable Zone) authenticity using infrared contrast.

2. Visual & Pattern-Based Checks

  • Image patterns presence/absence check (position, shape, color): Ensures proper alignment and design of patterns.

  • Confirm laminate integrity check in axial light: Detects tampering or peeling of protective laminates.

  • Kinegram check: Verifies the presence and authenticity of holographic elements.

  • LetterScreen check: Confirms specific embedded text security features.

  • Hologram detection and validation check: Validates the holographic elements (non-deprecated method).

3. Optical & Text-Based Verification

  • OCR for text field in UV light comparison with other text sources check: Compares text read under UV light with other document data.

  • Extended OCR check: Performs enhanced Optical Character Recognition to cross-verify text fields.

  • Extended MRZ check: Performs deep validation of the Machine Readable Zone for accuracy and authenticity.

4. Photo & Biometric Checks

  • Owner's photo embedding check: Determines whether the photo is printed or stuck on.

  • Owner's photo area advanced check (photo shape, size, position, etc.): Verifies placement and sizing against standards.

  • Portrait comparison check (document printed vs chip vs live): Compares the printed photo, chip-stored image, and live capture.

  • Fingerprint comparison check: Matches fingerprints with stored biometric data (if applicable).

5. Liveness & Anti-Tampering Checks

  • Document liveness check: Confirms that the document is not a static reproduction.

  • OVI check (deprecated): Previously used Optical Variable Ink check; replaced by Document liveness check.

  • Hologram presence check (deprecated): Superseded by hologram detection and validation.

6. Invisible & Encrypted Data Checks

  • Invisible Personal Information (IPI) visualization: Reveals hidden personal data.

  • Encrypted IPI: Validates encrypted hidden information.

7. Barcode & Metadata Verification

  • Barcode format check (code metadata, data format, contents format, etc.): Confirms barcode integrity and data consistency.

Why These Checks Matter

These security measures collectively ensure that an ID document is genuine, untampered, and compliant with regulatory standards. By combining multiple layers of visual, optical, and data-driven verification, fraudulent attempts are significantly reduced.
